Born Of Sin: Imperfect breed of humanity

22/06/09  ||  Khlysty

Seems that Fate is playing tricks on me. Here I am, a perfectly normal gentleman from Athens, Greece, doing reviews and shit for a Swedish metal site and upon my shoulders fall the great burden of reviewing death metal bands from Sweden. C’mon you Swedes in GD, where’s your patriotic feelings? You’re letting an infidel review one of trademarked products of your country?

Ah, well, since no-one appears to heed my calls, I’ll do what I can. Sooooo… Born Of Sin comes from Trollhättan, Sweden, and, although they exist in one form or another since 2001, “Imperfect Breed of Humanity” is their first record. To these ears, at least, the band taps the rich and bloody vein of Swedish tradition in death metal, to produce a very nice piece of nastiness. I have a feeling that the band’s attention while recording was equally focused towards making songs that are powerful, snappy, concise and memorable. So, basically, what we got here is record that’s –in almost perfectly balanced measures- brutal, groovy and melodic.

The band never moves toward blast-blur, but actually keeps a tight rein over the rhythmic pummeling it offers to the listener. The vocals are a little upfront, but, production-wise, the sound is meaty and in-yer-face-and-arse, with the guitars doing a great job riff-wise and the drums-bass combo propelling things forward with conviction and power (and the bass is generally AUDIBLE, so the rating goes another notch up…). Also the singing style is a scream-growl thingy that comes off real nice.

Maybe I’m a little biased here, but I think that the longest song of the record, “In sickness”, is also the best, with the band displaying a great ability in playing it moody and scary, before launching into a very groovy death-stomp. Which brings me to my only gripe with the record: hey, guys, nobody’s asking you to compose epics, but why not stretching out a bit more? I mean, it’s obvious that you got ideas, so why not expand on them? And, no, I don’t mean to urge you to move to redundancy territory, but, hey, a little bit more won’t harm, right?

Anyway, the bottom line is that this is a pretty solid outing from a band that really knows its roots and, while never moving far from them, always keeps an eye for expansion. “Imperfect Breed of Humanity” is a really cool death metal record and I won’t be surprised if these guys moved towards greater things pretty soon.

A very high 7,5 death-groove out of 10.
